4 Must-Have Attitudes When Betrayed

by Artie Davis

If you do life and ministry long enough…
Someone will consider you an enemy

It doesn’t matter what you do, there will always be those who will get hurt and then turn against you, sometimes violently. Remember Jesus was perfect, and He was still betrayed and falsely accused.

So we, being imperfect, could expect nothing less!
How do you handle betrayal and being maligned? The answer to that question will reveal your true heart and will set a path for your future. I think we need to do our best to follow the example of Jesus…

1. Don’t Be Defensive

The hardest thing to do…is nothing! When someone spreads lies about you and hurts you, you want to rise up and “tell the world” your side of the story. But being defensive is pride.
Pride comes before a fall, so don’t give into the temptation and try to run down everything you hear, read, or someone texts you. It’s a trap, and you will never run them all down. It just fans the flame!

2. Know God Is Your Defender

You don’t need to defend yourself! God is your defender, and He is able to take what the enemy intended for harm and turn it into good. We trust God for everything, including our reputation and what others believe or choose not to believe about us.

3. Pray for the Offender

The temptation is to pray…but pray down “fire from heaven to consume them.” Ha, we can’t do that; we must sincerely pray for their well being and future. God honors us when we “pray for those who despitefully use you.”When you pray for the person(s) who are hell-bent on destroying you, God comes to your side. Don’t worry…be happy!

4. Don’t Get Bitter!

This is paramount! If you allow bitterness and hurt to grow, it will destroy you. Scripture says bitterness is like “rottenness to your bones.” In other words, it eats you away from the inside out. Forgive those who hurt you. Not for their sake but for you own.
The greatest thing you can do is to press forward with joy and passion.

Is The Jezebel Spirit Sleeping In Someone You Know?

Understanding the dormant Jezebel spirit will save you lots of pain.

The Jezebel spirit is not always active. It hides, it sleeps, it’s there buried deep within the confines of the soul. When the Jezebel spirit wakes up things change, as a matter of fact everything changes and all hell breaks loose. Christ stands ready to help.

Did you have a close friend that was a wonderful companion until one day the Jezebel spirit started to manifest? The Jezebel spirit can lay dormant within a person for a long time until something or someone triggers its awakening. I often travel to Nicaragua, Central America. It is known as the land of lakes and volcanoes. Volcanoes can sit inactive for many years. Some volcanoes rumble, stir on the inside, and, as internal pressure mounts, explode spewing out hot ash and burning magna while destroying everything in its path. Erupted volcanoes can even change the weather, stop air travel, and hinder television and communication transmissions. Anyone dumb enough to build their home near an active volcano would lose their lives and property if it erupted.

THE DORMANT JEZEBEL SPIRIT

The dormant Jezebel spirit, just like a dormant volcano, waits for the day of activation. I have seen the hibernating Jezebel spirit come alive in people. On one occasion a person came into our church, plugged in, helped, served, and was extremely faithful. After a couple years something happened, the Jezebel spirit began to manifest and the battle for deliverance was on. Where was this spirit all along? The answer is the Jezebel spirit was dormant and just waiting for its awakening. You may have experienced the same thing. You meet a person. Everything is wonderful and life couldn’t be better. But then something happens and the Jezebel spirit awakens and the battle begins.

People that carry a dormant Jezebel spirit are often talented, available to help, do many good things, have a heart for people, and can be overachievers with many awards for service and accomplishments.

This is what makes this spirit so deceiving and dangerous.

Somewhere along the line however the dormant Jezebel spirit wakes up. Something happens that triggers an old hurt that was buried alive. In other words an old pain gets resurrected that triggers the Jezebel spirit. Perhaps they heard a conversation that reminded them of a past experience, maybe a song that awakened a memory of betrayal or a person that looked like someone that once hurt them. Maybe they were corrected and couldn’t handle being accountable to someone else. Or perhaps it’s a holiday like Thanksgiving or Christmas that stirs bad memories. The awakening could be anything, spiritual pride, a hurt, wound, memory, pain, song, or even a movie. Perhaps the dormant Jezebel spirit was activated by another more senior Jezebel.

THE AWAKENING

The thing we know for sure is after the Jezebel spirit is awakened it releases a tremendous warfare on the inside of the Jezebel hosts. This internal warfare fits our volcano example well as pressure continues to build until you have a full blown Jezebel explosion destroying the lives of all she influences. Now the awakened Jezebel hosts must cry out to God for help. They must repent of their sin, cast down imaginations and get deliverance. This requires a humbling, dying to self, real honesty and exposing of sin.

The Jezebel spirit can sit dormant inside hundreds of people. My wife Rhonda was ministering deliverance to a group of women having trouble getting free from past hurts and wounds. She instructed them to bring old photos, letters and gifts to the meeting. During the gathering they asked God for forgiveness of sins, stopped ungodly associations, renounced bad relationships, and broke old soul ties. Under the anointing of the Holy Spirit Rhonda ministered to them. Then they burned photos, letters, and objects in their possession from former ungodly relationships (Acts 19:19).

My wife reminded them that old photos release images, images resurrect memories, and memories release vain imaginations. These are things the Jezebel spirit looks for in people.

Imaginations release all kinds of spiritual warfare against the mind. Scripture says, “Casting down imaginations and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ” (2 Corinthians 10:5).

SPACE TO REPENT

As already said once the dormant Jezebel spirit is awakened a tremendous internal warfare takes place within the Jezebel. That inner pressure builds and builds until Jezebel can’t take it anymore and just explodes and has a nervous breakdown.

God gives Jezebel space to repent. Let’s take a look.

“And I gave her space to repent of her fornication and she repented not. Behold, I will cast her into a bed, and them that commit adultery with her into great tribulation, except they repent of their deeds.” (Revelation 2:21-22)

“I gave her space to repent.” This verse teaches that God gives Jezebel time to repent. We don’t know how long the time period is. It could be weeks, months, or even years. We just don’t know because everyone is different. It’s during this time period that the Holy Spirit gives those with a Jezebel spirit opportunity to get free. This “space” is the dormant phase, the quiet volcano, but somewhere along the line God says it’s time to “repent of her deeds” and receive deliverance. If Jezebel doesn’t repent of her sin, control, and change from her wicked ways and get free, then God allows great pressure to come on that person’s life. At this point the Jezebel spirit is no longer hidden and dormant. It enters progressive and later full manifestation as the seducing goddess of war.

JEZEBEL’S PRESSURE COOKER

Scripture confirms when repentance is rejected God puts Jezebel on a bed of tribulation. There is no escaping it for her. That bed of great tribulation is pressure. I liken that pressure to a nervous breakdown. Signs of a nervous
breakdown include:
  • Falling apart
  • Depression
  • Anxiety
  • Avoiding social engagements
  • Trouble sleeping
  • Getting sick easily
  • Outburst of anger
  • Fear
  • Withdraw from loved ones
  • Loss of joy
  • Isolation
  • Confusion
  • Excessive worry
  • Complaining
  • Uncontrolled emotions
  • Paranoid thinking
  • Can’t emotionally bounce back.

GRACE, LAW, JUDGMENT

Jezebel is like a volcano ready to explode at any moment and the internal warfare is tremendous. When God puts Jezebel on a bed of tribulation she can expect severer bouts of depression, mental instability leading to a dysfunctional mess. That internal warfare is the bed of tribulation. This is the Holy Ghost pressure cooker. Because God gives Jezebel a space to repent (grace) you must be all the more spiritually discerning. This is where spiritual maturity is important. More than likely when you met a person with a Jezebel spirit that spirit was dormant and invisible but now the space to repent is over, the Jezebel spirit is no longer hidden and attempts to usurp authority, seduce, control, manipulate, teach and prophesy by familiar spirits. She moves out in all the various Jezebel operations we discuss.

When the Jezebel spirit moves from dormant to manifestation you have to change. The way we have handled this is to treat every person with grace and love until such a time as Jezebel manifest. When Jezebel manifest your relationship has now changed and you must not be controlled or manipulated. You must act without delay. You are an adult and don’t need her permission to do what’s right. A manifestation is apparent when Jezebel violates your relationship, trust, boundaries, starts to seduce, control and manipulate with her various witchcrafts. Notice this pattern: grace, law, and judgment.

God extends a grace period for maturity and conforming to his word. You also extend a grace period for developing personal relationships. During the grace period you get to know each other. Relationships are tested and trust developed or violated. When grace is violated God moves to the next phase of discipline called the law.
Biblical laws (sanctions) are given for our protection. Laws offer guidance for moral, social, civil, and righteous behavior. When laws are broken then God moves into the next phase called judgment. In other words, a man reaps what he sows. If you sow to the flesh you shall reap of the flesh. Another scripture says, “The wages of sin is death.” So we see a pattern of grace, law, and judgment. This means you give people loving grace while developing a relationship. When they trample on grace then you must tell them the way it is. That’s laying down the law or telling people what’s expected of them. It’s telling them what’s allowed and what’s not allowed. This is what God does with us. He gives us grace and His Word. From His Word we learn what’s expected of us.

REPENTANCE BEFORE RECONCILIATION

After hearing the law and if a person refuses to follow the rules then you have no choice but to enter the judgment phase. Judgment puts distance between you and Jezebel. The judgment phase could be terminating the relationship, removing that person from a leadership position, or entering some sort of probationary period until repentance is confirmed. All relationships are built on trust. Jezebel violates trust. If she doesn’t repent you have no choice but to terminate the relationship. I coined this saying, “There is no foundation for reconciliation without repentance.” This means that relationships are restored only after repentance. No repentance and real change then absolutely no restoration of relationship. Repentance is more than words. Repentance consists of actions of changed behavior that prove something really has changed within the heart.

Again, God said I gave her space to repent. That time period to repent is up to God and the person needing deliverance from the Jezebel spirit. The part that is up to you is this, when you see the Jezebel spirit awaken from its dormant sleep and start operating you must act. At this point you have a big potential problem if you fail to act regardless of the wonderful relationship you had in the past with that person. I know it sounds hard but at this point “you cannot suffer Jezebel” to operate in your life, among your family members, among your children, or in your ministry. This means you have to say no. What you allowed before in your relationship cannot be allowed now. Period.

SAY NO AND MEAN IT

Just like a volcano the word “no” will make the Jezebel spirit erupt and go ballistic toward you. Let it happen, the sooner the better. When she goes ballistic remember it’s not your fault. The Jezebel spirit tries to make every uncomfortable situation seem like it’s your fault. The truth is as long as you were saying yes to her control everything was fine but the day you decided to say no then all hell started breaking loose. Ignore that emotional witchcraft and stand your ground. Be civil but firm. When the Jezebel spirit awakens you must step back and really see what’s going on. You can’t validate a Jezebel’s spirits actions by your inaction. You are a warrior, get that armor on and fight back.

When you say no to the Jezebel spirit the war will begin. That spiritual war is your path to freedom. Put on the whole armor of God and stand against the wiles of this spirit. You have no other choice if you desire to live in victory. The good news is that you win when you resist. Learn all you can about spiritual warfare, your delegated authority given by Christ, breaking the powers of witchcraft that attack your mind, how to use the name of Jesus, and all the weapons available in the Word of God
